“A Repair Kit for Grading: Fifteen Fixes for Broken Grades” was first published in 2007 and has been widely used by schools/districts as the basis for revising grading practices. In this session the why, what and how of each fix will be described briefly and participants will be asked to consider this question – “In your classroom/school/district is each fix in place, on the way or not implemented at all?”
Link to PresentationThis session introduces an approach to advancing best practices in classroom assessment and grading that allows a school or district to choose which best practices destination or destinations along a progressive continuum of options, from tightening up traditional grading practices to a complete transformation to standards-based grading, it wants to move toward and at what pace. Details on essential components of the different destinations will be provided along with tips on the time, planning, support, and communication needed to successfully implement each targeted destination.
The session is based on the ASCD book (2016), "Charting a Course to Standards-Based Grading: What to Stop, What to Start, and Why It Matters."
This session is designed to help educators learn how to effectively implement a standards-based grading system. Sam Miller, Chief Administrator at AEA 267 and former superintendent at Solon will co-present with Matt Townsley, school administrator at Solon, on the strategies and timeline they used that resulted in Solon becoming the first school district in Iowa to implement K-12 standards-based grading.
